At the end of 16th century Ukiyo-e, a picture describing the floating world, was painted. Since the invention of multi-colored wooden prints around 1765 Ukiyo-e prints were produced massively for ordinary people. They loved Ukiyo-e prints drawn by popular painters such as Utamaro, Hiroshige and Hokusai. As the popularity of famous painters has been high, some traders in art objects sold a fake Ukiyo-e painting as a genuine one drawn by these famous painters.
Minoru Yokoyama, Professor Emeritus of Kokugakuin University in Tokyo, member of our editorial team, analyzes why there seem to be fake paintings in museums and analyzes reasons why many fake Ukioe pictures are preserved as genuine ones even at a famous Museum of Art.
